Rox Burkey – Blog Place

RC and JP (Rob and Joan) Carter are Indie Authors and huge supporters of indie authors. They feature indie authors on their website and do a live Meet the Author Podcast featuring indie authors from around the globe. The writing duo is the award-winning author of The O’Rourke Series and a member of the Underground Authors. One of the most unique aspects of this couple is their paranormal investigations. Watching these live is an experience you will never forget.

Today, I am delighted to share our conversation as they share their passions for life.

Welcome, Joan and Rob. Thank you for spending time with me and telling my readers about yourselves.

Thank you for inviting us to be a part of your blog. We appreciate the opportunity. We are happy to meet your readers.

My audience would like to know how you met and began your journey together.

We met when a group of our friends went to a Blue Grass Music Festival together. The attraction was mutual and electric at the beginning. And thus, the adventure began.

What genres do each of you prefer reading?

Rob prefers mystery, fantasy, and paranormal. Oddly enough, Joan also prefers mystery, fantasy, and paranormal.

Have you each always wanted to write?

Yes, we both have always wanted to write.

What is your writing process together?

Our writing process differs with each book we have written. Sometimes we write each chapter together, discussing it as we go along. Other times, we write separate chapters and then review each chapter together.

What is your favorite book you have written so far, and why?

Our favorite book so far is A Chance of a Ghost, which is part of the Magnolia Bluff Crime Chronicles series. Caleb Pirtle (who passed away a year ago, and we still miss him every day) asked us to become members of the Underground Authors writing group. Caleb suggested that we write a paranormal mystery for the series. Up to that point, we had not written a paranormal book. Caleb was right, as usual. Writing a book that blended our two passions, writing and the paranormal, was a brilliant idea. We had a lot of fun writing A Chance of a Ghost.

Who do you rely upon for giving you honest feedback on your writing?

We have six adult children who are very intelligent and independent people. They have no problem telling us where we have succeeded and where we have missed the mark.

I know paranormal investigations are serious business for you both. Did you both have this sixth sense before you met?

Joan’s first encounter with the paranormal happened when she was seven. She has always sensed and seen things since then. Rob saw a UFO when he was in his early twenties. Our first investigation was a trip to Arizona to hunt for UFO’s. Our second investigation, was in our first apartment that happened to be haunted.

I saw one of your events, and your ability to sense spirits and help them is unique. How did you get involved in this, and why?

One thing that you may not know about us is that we spent about 20 years as pastors in a deliverance ministry. During that time, we helped people with oppression and possession of demonic spirits. We performed exorcisms. We need to make clear those cases are very rare and unusual. Most of the spirits we encounter need help and are not demons. Some of them just want attention.

Can you relate a situation that stands out and why it was so different?

They are all different. You never know what’s going to happen. We have seen doors open and close by themselves. We heard a door slam that was sealed shut and heard audible voices. We have seen laundry baskets and plates tossed. We have had our hair pulled, been touched, and one team member was scratched.

Do your children share the same passion for reading and writing?

All of our children love to read. Two of our children are writing. Two of our grandchildren are also writing. All of our children and grandchildren are creative. They are writers, artists, crafters, and chefs.

Was there a compelling event that put you on the path to advocate for Indie Authors?

There was no compelling event. We realized quickly that marketing for indie authors was difficult and wanted to do whatever we could to help.

Do you always write reviews for the books you read or listen to?

We try to write reviews for all of the books we have read. It is very important. Some, unfortunately, have fallen through the cracks.

Joan, Rob, you’ve been invited to attend a writer’s conference in Ireland. You’ll be seated between two of your favorite authors, living or not. Who are they? What one question would you like them to answer and why?

Do we have to pick just two authors? We both would love to spend time with Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Isaac Asimov, Agatha Christie, Jules Verne, and perhaps, G. K. Chesterton. We would not have only one question. We would, however, just love to hear them speak.
