***** Story ***** Narration ***** Overall True Determination -Review by Rox Burkey
‘Raid on Cochecho,’ by Peni Jo Renner, is an exciting historical fiction novel that follows the journey of a young Puritan orphan named Grace Hampton, who lives in Cochecho, New Hampshire, in 1676. The story begins with Grace’s innocent life turned upside down when she overhears plans for an attack on the local Pennacook people and meets Menane, an orphan from the tribe. Their fateful encounter intertwines their destinies, setting the stage for a poignant tale of survival and resilience with two people of different cultures.
Peni Jo Renner brings life to her characters by adding unique elements to their distinct personalities. Grace’s childhood willfulness blossoms into the fortitude of a young adult. Menane’s determination as a young warrior in training evolves into that of a man of honor, respected by all. The harsh realities of the times unfold over thirteen years as Grace grows into a resourceful cheesemonger and Menane rises to prominence as a respected warrior. Their paths cross again when Menane risks everything to protect Grace from the impending violence inflicted by his brother, Kancamagus. The combination of well-researched historical events skillfully combined with realistic fictional elements delivers a rich tapestry of determined characters as they navigate life events.
The remarkable voice-over actor Kathryn Fields adds three-dimensional depth to this novel. The narration maintains an exquisite pace with perfect voices and intonations that highlight the recognizable themes of friendship, betrayal, and the complexities of cultural relations through the eyes of Grace during a tumultuous period in American history.
The young woman’s journey from a frightened child to a determined young woman evokes empathy and connection, masterfully investing listeners and readers in her story. Overall, ‘Raid on Cochecho’ – Book Three of The Puritan Chronicles not only highlights a lesser-known historical event but delivers a powerful narrative filled with authenticity and emotional depth. The story is engaging as historical fiction on its own. Add it to your reading or listening shelves today.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Writing historical fiction has always been a lifelong dream of mine. I was discouraged for many years after receiving multiple rejection slips, and turned to other creative outlets like crocheting, quilting and cross-stitch for many years. Then I met a 3rd cousin of mine online who is also into geneology and history. She told me we shared a common ancestor who was involved in the Salem Witchcraft Hysteria of 1692, and her story had never been told. My love of writing was rekindled, and I began to research this ancestor, Rebecca Blake Eames. In August of 2012, I had the privilege of visiting her grave in Boxford, Massachusetts. After months and months of research, writing, rewriting, and revising, Puritan Witch came into being, featuring a lovely sketch done by my sister-in-law, Jane Sisk. I have several other story ideas I am working on at the moment, all of which pertain to interesting ancestors my 3rd cousin has introduced me to.
