“This is a night for being brave.”

In the aftermath of a devastating sickness that shatters their close-knit beach town, six lonely kids are drawn together during the unpredictable autumn equinox. Among them are fourteen-year-old Lorelei, who yearns to be an oceanographer, and her peculiar younger brother, Tad, who possesses an otherworldly curiosity.

When Lorelei has a strange and almost deadly encounter in a sea cave, her loyal boyfriend, Casey, cannot reconcile her fantastical experience with the rational world. Condi, Lorelei’s best friend, understands ocean magic but isn’t free to share what she knows. Kait, a girl from Ireland, regrets her impulsive move to America–all because of an odd occurrence involving her deceased boyfriend’s lost surfboard. When tides turn and the moon shifts, Isaac, the new kid in town who despises the ocean, is forced to face the truth–a profound and powerful magic lives in the deep.

Guided by a wise surf master, mystical old women known as the Beachlings, and an open-hearted grandmother, six kids embark on transformative adventures that challenge their beliefs about possibilities and the intense nature of love.

Amethyst, the Shallows is the companion novel to The Aquamarine Surfboard.

In Amethyst, The Shallows, Kellye Abernathy returns readers to the Windy Hollow in this delightful companion story to The Aquamarine Surfboard. Windy Hollow’s townspeople emerge from quarantine after a mysterious illness forces this isolation. Surfers finally venture back to the beach and into the waves as families work to resume their lives. Ms. Abernathy does an excellent job illustrating each character’s feelings, especially the Beachlings.

The narrative introduces a diverse cast of new characters with relatable, unique traits and storylines that intricately weave into the plot. Condi, a character who grapples with isolation, is eager to reconnect with friends, while Lorelei, faced with the challenge of caring for her still-ill mother, undergoes a profound transformation. As the seclusion orders are lifted, Lorelei and Casey’s relationship is tested, providing a compelling subplot that mirrors their personal growth and maturity, a theme that resonates with young readers.

As the young people return to the ocean, its depths of magic are revealed in delightfully fanciful ways. Characters learn to seek truth and gain trust from their adventurous experiences. The healing powers of enchanting sea creatures, exotic undersea plants, and rocks give young readers a sense of balance and hope. Young readers will find Amethyst, The Shallows exciting as they tag along with the relatable characters below and above the waves, learning cherished values to live by. Surf’s up.
